About St. John Vianney Catholic Church

A Communion of Cultures, Rooted in Central Florida

St. John Vianney Catholic Church, located at 6200 South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, Florida,
is a vibrant parish community that has served the families of south Orlando for well over six decades.
Today the parish describes itself as a communion of cultures united in the love of Christ, reaching
out to all through prayer, spiritual formation, compassion, and service — a mission lived out daily
by thousands of families across generations.

Humble Beginnings

The story of St. John Vianney began in 1957, when the Diocese laid plans for a new mission
church to relieve the growing congregation of St. James Parish (now St. James Cathedral) in
downtown Orlando. That same year, Monsignor John Bishop — the beloved priest who had
guided Orlando’s Catholic community for decades, expanded the old St. James Church, and helped
establish St. Margaret Mary Parish in Winter Park — passed away. In tribute to his years of selfless
service, the new mission parish was given the name “John.” It was formally dedicated in March
1958 and placed under the patronage of St. John Vianney, the humble French parish priest known
as the patron saint of parish priests.
The first Mass at the new mission church was celebrated on January 5, 1958, in what is now the
parish’s Social Hall, with Monsignor Terence Farrelly presiding. Rev. Vincent E. Smith became
the parish’s first resident pastor in 1959, leading the young community through its earliest years
of growth. Under his leadership, the parish added air conditioning, terrazzo flooring, and other
improvements to its original building, and in January 1962, St. John Vianney School opened its
doors to its first students. Within just a few years, enrollment had grown so quickly that the school
added classrooms, a convent, and a dedicated teaching order — the Sisters of St. Francis of Glen
Riddle, Pennsylvania — to keep pace with the young families moving into south Orlando.

Decades of Growth

As Orlando itself grew — fueled by the rise of tourism, the opening of Orlando International Airport,
and the arrival of Walt Disney World — St. John Vianney grew alongside it. The parish became
something of a “mother church” for the region, giving rise to several new parishes carved from its
own boundaries, including Blessed Trinity (1965), Holy Family (1975), and Holy Cross (1992), as
families spread further across south Orlando and new communities needed churches of their own.
By the late 1970s, the original mission church could no longer hold its growing congregation. Ground
was broken on a new, permanent church and social hall, with the cornerstone laid in December 1979.
Bishop Thomas Grady blessed the completed church in March 1981 — a project made possible
through the sacrificial generosity of more than 900 parish families.
The parish continued to flourish through the 1980s and 1990s, adding ministries, a Spanish-language
Mass and prayer group, and beloved traditions such as the Living Stations of the Cross, a Lenten
Passion Play performed by parish youth that toured to other churches and communities across
Central Florida.

Into the New Millennium

As St. John Vianney approached its 40th anniversary in 1998, the parish undertook an ambitious
Capital Campaign that funded a new community center and gymnasium, a renovated chapel of

reservation and bell tower, a new full-immersion baptismal font, and an expanded gathering court-
yard. More than 2,400 families contributed over four million dollars to the effort, and Bishop

Norbert Dorsey rededicated the renewed church in 2000.
The parish celebrated fifty years of parish life in 2009 with multicultural liturgies honoring its
diverse community, and installed a mosaic of its patron saint in the church narthex. A further
renovation in 2011 — completed under the leadership of Fr. Miguel González, who was named
pastor in 2012 — updated the church’s pews, tiles, and worship space in time for the introduction
of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal.

St. John Vianney Today

Since 2019, the parish has been guided by Fr. Carlos J. Cabán, who steered the community through
the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to lead St. John Vianney’s mission of
faith and service today. From its beginnings as a small mission church serving a handful of families,
St. John Vianney has grown into a parish of more than 4,000 households — a rich and multicultural
family united, as its mission prayer states, in the desire to grow in faith, live with compassion, and
reach out in service to all.
